Mean streets of Gatlinburg, Tennessee

My suggestion on the best time to visit Gatlinburg?  3:00AM on a June morning.  Cooler temperatures and no maddening crush of people actually make it rather pleasant.

After a sally of equipment and work in the darkness the morning light revealed that LifeFormations had added an attention grabbing dinosaur to the facade of Ripley's Moving Theater located on the Parkway in beautiful downtown Gatlinburg.

The mail must go through

These vehicles were used to deliver the mail in the rural west in the thirties and forties.  The last one includes a high exhaust that would have indicated it was used to cross streams.

Anhumas Abyss

Anhumas Abyss is located in Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.  The cave is accessed by a gap in surface rocks.  The floor is reached via a 72 meter vertical rappel which puts a person at the surface of the lake that is contained in the cave.  The lake reaches depths of 80 meters.  When sunlight spills through the gap it illuminates the interior of the cave (as well as the clear lake) and reflects green and blue from the magnesium and limestone in the rocks.

Temporary residents

The circled area in the upper photo is of a nest that is visible from our lawn.  The telephoto zoom enabled me to get the image of the chicks.  This is the second year that we have had a pair of hawks nesting there.  This is the first time that we have been able to view the chicks.  We have not positively identified the species of hawk, but think it is probably a Red Tail (buteo jamaicensis).

Nest of straw

The goal of Studio 1984 was to design a small building made of almost completely renewable materials.  They called it Nest.  Perhaps they achieved their goal, but questions of fire, insects, and rodents come to mind.  More images.

Counting Puffins

It is time to count puffins.  Every five years the National Trust (UK) rangers conduct a puffin census on the Farne Islands.  The birds return to these islands off the northeast coast of England to breed.  The Farne Islands offer food sources, few ground predators, and good nesting protection.  Despite those good conditions the puffin population is declining.  See more images here.
